Did You See The Elephant?

In Civil War lingo, seeing the elephant is participating in a battle. I thought that it would be appropriate to make a page where you could talk about your experiences at events or in "battle". After all, every soldier has some war story to tell.

my experience at cedar creek was great i had more fun with the group but my experience seeing the elephant was kind of scary at first but once we got close to the rebs it was very loud and hot with all the gear and wool but it was really great i enjoy being there

I am glad that you enjoyed it. I had a lot of fun at Cedar Creek too. Thanks for posting your story!

I first saw the elephant atthe 145th 1st Manassas. A big fife and drum corps was across the road from me. They were wery good.

Do you remember which fife and drum corps it was? I would like to see them some time. It sounds like you had a good time.

Since i started reenacting it has been my favorite thing to do, it is what i look foward for in the school year..I first saw the elephant at Neshaminy in 07,..I got by gun for Christmas,.. now after going to that, bethpage, and cedar creek, as well as many smaller events, i m writing a book about my experience, a kind of historical fiction, based on the reenactments, not just on the battle, but on all the fun we had inbetween, its getting published i hoping before Neshaminy 08 and i m bringing it there,
Drew~9th Virginia, Comp. C, 10th Bat. ANV, out of Long Island, NY

That is great! I would love to read it sometime.

William that fife and drum corps at 145th Manassas from Atlanta was the 125th Ohio "Tiger Band". I've got one friend in the 125th Ohio, Andy Deen.

Thanks Andrew! I had been wondering who that was for a while.

I first saw the elephant at 20th Neshaminy. It was a medium sized event and really hot. Now I know why there weren't a lot of 12 year olds in the Union Army
